Growing fast

Our original 16 chicks that hatched 3/22 are now 5 weeks old and have moved to what we call the turkey coop. They will be able to stay in the turkey coop for about 3 weeks. Then they have to move again because the turkeys will need a home. Three week from now these birds will be very close to the same size as the laying hens we currently have and old enough to defend them selfs in the main coop. The roosters will go to a chicken tractor and the hens to the hen house.

The Chicks have been moved.

The 16 chicks that hatched  a couple weeks back have moved to the coop! They have not adventured out yet, but they are thinking about it and can often be seen peering out the door. More chicks will be hatching this week.

First Chicks of 2025

16 babies hatched the weekend of March 22nd. Even after 10 years of hatching our own chicks, it is always a lot of fun and excitement watching them hatch and everyone was quit focused on the event. The last baby was having a rough time and needed some help. He stayed in the incubator for more than 24 hours and There was still some concern when he moved to the brooder. One foot did not seem to be straightening out and that leg did not seem right either, But to my delight, he was up and walking normally by the next morning and now at 2 weeks old he is a little smaller that the others and has 2 bare spots one his back, but pecks back if picked on and runs across the brooder with the others. He seems to have fully recovered and is keeping pace with the everyone else.
